At first, set up brands (also called manufacturers) and products.
1) Login admin panel.
2) Add all brands via Products -> Edit Manufacturers.
3) Go to product edit form via Products -> Edit Categories/Products, select a manufacturer from the drop down list for the product when adding or modifying a product.

Secondly, add Shop by Brand content boxes into the storefront.
4) Go to Theme-Layout -> Theme and Layouts, open design window for the active theme.
5) Select "Shop by Brand" from the "Add Content" drop down list, and add it into either left or right column. Change the style for the box.
6) In the middle column, select the radio button on "Brand page". Add one of the brand page templates from the "Add Content" drop down list into the middle column. Do not use more than one template in the Brand page.

The available brand page templates are:
Brand Products - Text Only
Brand Products with Thumbnails x 1
Brand Products with Thumbnails x 2
Brand Products with Thumbnails x 3
Brand Products with Thumbnails x 4

Available from version 3.0

Just wondering if it's possible to have the Shop by Brand template appear as a 'drop down menu' or scroll, instead of using up an entire side column?

For stores with hundreds of brands, this could make it much neater.
